The Kakadu region of Australia is home to some of the most impressive landscapes in the country.

In the Litchfield National Park, pretty cascading waterfalls are peppered throughout the lush scenery, bringing mesmerising views to the proceedings and forming ideal habitats for some of the region’s best-loved wildlife.

Tolmer Falls is one of the most impressive falls in the park, falling down over two high escarpments into a deep plunge pool below. There is a great viewing platform at the top of the falls that lets you witness the cascading water as it descends. From there, you can also see out across the surrounding scenery and take a stroll along the walking track to the rock pools that sit above the falls.

These pools are ideal for a refreshing dip after exploring in the heat of the Australian sun.

How to Access Tolmer Falls

The waterfall can be reached via a sealed road off near the western edge of the Litchfield National Park. A short walk from the carpark takes you straight out onto the viewing platform at the top, where you can either look out over the falls or begin the 1.6-kilometre return Tolmer Falls Walk. In total, the walk will take you around 45 minutes to complete, and takes you past impressive scenery.

You’ll pass Top End sandstone country and get to discover Tolmer Creek and its tributary. There are plenty of little rock pools dotted around, too.

The Falls themselves were named after South Australian Police officer, Alexander Tolmer by explorer Frederick Henry Litchfield.

Things to See at Tolmer Falls

• The Bats

  As well as pretty walks and stunning views from the viewing platform, there are plenty of other things to do at Tolmer Falls. At the base of the waterfall, you might catch a glimpse of the elusive Ghost Bats and Orange Horeshoe Bats that live there.

  They nest in the caves at the bottom of Tolmer Falls and come out at night to hunt their prey in the vicinity. These magnificent creatures are native to the region, so keep your eyes peeled while you’re exploring.

• Rock Pools

  The Litchfield National Park is filled with wonderful scenery, and its waterfalls are some of its most prized possessions. Tolmer Falls is one of the most impressive in the area, boasting soaring escarpments, cascading falls, and a deep plunge pool at its base. While exploring its aesthetic appeal, keep your eyes and ears open for the resident bats that have made the waterfall even more famous.
