Best Swimming Spots in Kakadu National Park

Kakadu National Park is known for its stunning natural swimming holes, we’ve detailed some of our favourites for you!

There are so many great swimming spots across Kakadu National Park that no matter where you find yourself, you’re guaranteed to have the best swim of your life!

  • Twin Falls

Twin Falls are some of the most visited falls in Kakadu National Park, and it’s easy to see why. Two huge falls cascade 150m down the cliff face into a deep pool. During the dry season you can get right under the falls and swim in the pool below. For the experienced bushwalker, a hike to the top of the falls is essential. After a tiring walk the plateau has a collection of pools where you can take a refreshing dip. The views here are extraordinary. As you cool off in the pools, you can see the dizzying fall the water takes before reaching the deep pool below.

  • Jim Jim Falls

In the wet season Jim Jim Falls become a terrifying feat of nature, with walls of water cascading down the 200m high cliff face. The sweet trickle of the dry season however turns these falls into the perfect escape for the Kakadu visitor. Through the forest and over some boulders you can find a deep plunge pool. For something a bit calmer, head to the beach, and wade in the shallows splashing around with friends. As the water trickles from above, you can enjoy a natural shower, be prepared though, the water here is cooler than you might expect!

  • Gunlom Falls

Perhaps the most spectacular swimming spot in Kakadu, Gunlom Falls is the perfect place to cool down in the Northern Territory’s scorching heat. At the foot of the falls is a delightful large plunge pool, perfect for a quick stop. For those with more time, take a short climb to the top of the waterfall where you will be gobsmacked at the incredible beauty in front of you. Here you can find a natural infinity pool as well as a collection of smaller pools. Once you’ve cooled down, relax atop the warm boulders surrounding you.

  • Maguk Gorge

It might not be the most well-known swimming spot in Kakadu, but Maguk Gorge should not be missed. A snorkellers dream, the gorge is home to a vibrant array of marine life and is easily accessible for the less experienced adventurer. The water is jade green, with the high gorge sides providing shade over the water. Confident swimmers can swim to the far side of pool where the falls trickle in the dry season and provide swimmers with a great shoulder massage.

Remember to always be crocodile safe and keep an eye out for signs indicating if it is safe to swim. Many pools and waterfalls are closed to the public in the wet season due to unsafe currents and flooding. You should always check for warnings and closures before making your trip.
