Kakadu National Park is home to Mamukala Wetlands, which are an incredible way to experience the wildlife of Kakadu.
Welcome to Mamukala Wetlands, a hub of Kakadu’s most beautiful wildlife and natural scenery! These wetlands are home to magpie geese, kingfishers and a whole array of different birdlife. You won’t even need binoculars to spot the birdlife here – they’re everywhere!
Exploring the wetlands
Walking around the Mamukala Wetlands is the best way to explore! Simply take the walking trail that circles the whole park. This route showcases the best bits of the wetlands, and you’ll be able to check out the viewing platforms, which showcase the best views of the birdlife.
Late July to September is normally a good time to go!
Or if you’re feeling slightly more luxurious, take a flight over the wetlands or cruise along the river’s surface in a boat.
Whether you’re taking a flight over the wetlands or cruising on a water cruise boat, spend a couple of hours looking around these fascinating flat plains – it is a basin that is full of water and marshland that has adapted to the harsh environment of Uluru.
A natural ecosystem
These wetlands are a watering hole for natural culture and a natural hub for the ecosystem.
All different kinds of life on the land support the river’s healthy ecosystem – and the land has been a lifeforce for the people of Kakadu who have called this water their home, their spirit and their life, deeply rooted in their generations.
Birdwatching, like no other place in Australia
There are over 280 species of birds in the wetlands, and actually, it’s one of the best places to watch birds in the whole of Australia, due to its openness. These open plains allow for better viewing of these magnificent birds.
The birdwatching here is dynamic, and you’ll always be able to see some fascinating birds on their migration journey.
Spot the magpie geese, and they dig deeply for water chestnuts underneath the surface. During the sunrises, the geese make a V shape, and they fly in and out of the day, sunset and sunrise.
