5 Day 4WD Kakadu & Litchfield Adventure – Camping

5 Day Kakadu and Litchfield Adventure Itinerary

Delve into the natural beauty of the Northern Territory from Darwin on this 5 Day Kakadu and Litchfield Tour, and explore the region’s rich Aboriginal cultural heritage at the same time.

Day One: Darwin to Kakadu National Park (lunch & dinner)

We’ll depart Darwin bright and early to head to our first stop on this 4WD adventure, the Wetlands of the NT. Here you’ll experience an introduction to the varied wildlife of Kakadu National Park. It promises the chance of sighting the river’s apex predator – the saltwater croc.

The afternoon sees you gain a greater insight into the whole region with a visit to Bowali Visitor Centre. You’ll then pass the famous Cahills River crossing to reach the Ubirr prehistoric rock art site and sunset over the Nadab Floodplains.

Day Two: Jim Jim or Twin Falls to Jabiru & back (breakfast, lunch & dinner)

There’s little let up on Day 2, which starts with an exclusive cultural experience with the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s traditional guardians. You’ll next head to either Jim Jim Falls or the two streams of Twin Falls (seasonal factors and cultural observations permitting).

You’ll lunch at the falls and continue on to Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Its artefacts, artworks and displays help to unravel the significance of Kakadu to its Aboriginal communities with talks given by community elders. There’s also some time to purchase keepsakes and souvenirs made locally.

Day Three: Jabiru to Katherine (breakfast, lunch & dinner)

Day 3 starts before sunrise, so the spectacular Top End dawn can be experienced from one of the beautiful lookouts in the area. Enjoy a tasty breakfast and discover Burrungkuy (Nourlangie), a part of the Arnhem Land escarpment containing some of the oldest and best-preserved Aboriginal rock art in Australia – the Anbangbang Gallery.

You’ll also get the chance to admire the escarpment from Kunwarddewardde Lookout before taking the 4WD track to Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) for lunch beside a lush waterfall and plunge pool. The day ends with a gentle 2 km walk through savannah woodland.

Day Four: Katherine to Darwin (breakfast & lunch)
Switching Kakadu for Nitmiluk National Park, day 4 kicks off with a visit to Nitmiluk National Park Katherine Gorge for a 2 hour boat tour (own cost) or a hike along the rocks. Next on our itinerary is Edith Falls where we’ll enjoy a tasty lunch and a refreshing dip. We recommend bringing your swim wear as well as your cameras!

After a picnic lunch, you’ll make the return journey to Darwin along the Stuart Highway, which follows the approximate route of nineteenth-century explorer John McDouall Stuart across Australia. You’ll stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery in order to learn how this tiny Northern Territory settlement played such an important role in the Second World War. You’ve got some free time in Darwin, so why not head to the Mindil Markets or explore the city.

Day Five: Darwin to Litchfield & back to Darwin

Although back in Darwin you still have a day of adventure awaiting. You’ll spend the day in Litchfield Park! It includes a trip to Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve, home to turtles, water pythons and crocodiles. Or book the 1 hour Jumping Croc Cruise (own expense).

You’ll be able to stand back-to-back with 2 m tall magnetic termite mounds, some thought to be 100 years old. The tour comes to a conclusion among the many dramatic waterfalls within the park, such as Florence Falls or Tolmer Falls and the popular bathing spots of either Buley Rockhole or Wangi Falls. Your return to Darwin is also included.

Please note that due to the nature of the Top End, our Kakadu & Litchfield tour itineraries are flexible and may not be exactly as described here. Your guide will take into account a range of factors including weather conditions, water levels and road access to plan a tour that will offer you the best experience in the area, however, some locations may be inaccessible when you travel. If you are booking this tour to visit a certain attraction described in the itinerary, please include it in the notes so your guide is aware of your expectations prior to travel.
