4 Day Kakadu 4WD Adventure Itinerary
Immerse yourself in the wild landscapes and rich cultural heritage of the Northern Territory’s Kakadu National Park on our 4 Day 4WD Adventure!
Day One: Darwin to Kakadu (lunch & dinner)
Following pick-up in central Darwin your 4 Day Kakadu Tour takes you east. You’ll travel by 4WD through the expansive landscapes of the Northern Territory and cross the boundary of Kakadu National Park UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continuing to Jabiru, where we’ll be staying tonight, you’ll have a chance to discover the region’s significance to its First Nations populations at Bowali Visitor Centre.
Crossing the croc-rich area at Cahills Crossing on the border of Kakadu and Arnhem Land. An important habitat for all manner of native wetland species, it’s the world’s highest concentration of saltwater crocs which is bound to hold your attention onboard your East Alligator River Cruise. The region’s extraordinary birdlife takes centre stage at your next stop at the Wetlands.
We’ll also stop at the Ubirr Rock Art Site for some incredible art and important history. Day 1 ends with sunset over the Nadab Floodplains before heading back to our accommodation for a delicious dinner and a great night’s sleep.
Day Two: Jim Jim Falls/Twin Falls to Jabiru (breakfast, lunch & dinner)
Day 2 sees you remain in the Jabiru area. It begins with a cultural experience led by Arnhem Land’s traditional guardians. There’s then the chance to head off-road by 4WD and on foot to the spectacular cascades of Jim Jim Falls or Twin Falls for another filling picnic lunch.
Returning to Kakadu’s human wonders, you’ll end the day at Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, where Aboriginal community elders will be on hand to impart stories about their traditional way of life which will have you captivated. End the day by examining the handicrafts and souvenirs made by local artists.
Day Three: Kakadu to Katherine (breakfast, lunch & dinner)
The penultimate day of this 4 Day Kakadu Tour starts with sunrise at Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) Rock. You’ll also have the chance to check out the Nafurlandja Lookout and Anbangbang Billabong surrounds. You won’t want to miss it, despite the early wakeup call, since it’s one of the national park’s finest viewpoints.
Anbangbang is also the name given to some of the best-preserved ancient Aboriginal rock artworks yet discovered, part of Burrungkuy (Nourlangie), a sandstone formation that’s a beautiful sight whatever the time of day. Among the many images, you’ll see figures from the mythology of the Bininj Culture, who have lived in harmony with the animals and geography of Kakadu for tens of thousands of years. Enjoy your lunch at the Maguk Falls and take a dip in the pools to cool off.
Eventually, we’ll make our way to Nitmiluk National Park and then to our final stop in Katherine. Tonight we’ll be snoozing away in Knotts Crossing Resort.
Day Four: Katherine to Darwin (breakfast & lunch)
Day 4 starts with a trip to Nitmiluk National Park Katherine Gorge where you can jump on a 2 hour boat ride (own cost). If you don’t want to do that, go for a fun walk (between 1.4 and 4.8 km). We will then head to Edith Falls for a cooling swim. The falls are one of the undisputed highlights of any journey to the region.
On route back to Darwin, you’ll travel along the Stuart Highway to the town of Adelaide River. You’ll discover the role it played during the Second World War at its dedicated war cemetery. Your tour ends with the sun setting over the water beside Mindil Beach art and street food market.
