Kakadu is home to some fantastically unique natural spectacles – and Mataranka Hot Springs is one of them.
The Mataranka Hot Springs are a beautiful part of the Northern Territory. This thermal pool almost looks like a naturally occurring spa in the Esley National Park. It’s about an hour’s drive from Katherine.
The thermal pool has a soft sandy bottom, and the water is a gorgeously warm temperature of 34 degrees – so it’s the perfect pool for relaxing in, any time of year.
Nestled in a remote bush setting, the Elsey National Park is a must-do, if you’re looking for a place to swim!
A healing mineral pool
These waters are believed to have healing properties due to high mineral content, which will help soothe tight muscles.
Visitors can take a short stroll around the pools before taking a dip.
It’s a still, serene spot with turquoise blue waters. The pool meanders through a thicket of vivid green bushland, accompanied by the sound of native birds.
Wildlife around the thermal springs
The bushland around the thermal pools is teeming with life.
The entire Elsey National Park is a total paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts! There are lots of different conservation projects which are happening throughout the park. Because of this, it’s a protected area and therefore you need to have a parks pass before you go in. That’s because the nature around the area should be protected. Find your way to this hidden paradise for a slice of adventure.
After you’ve swum, relax on one of the sun loungers around the pool.
There are some deck chairs which surround the area. Grab a book and something cold to drink, and simply soak up the peaceful serenity of the area.
How to get there
The Mataranka Thermal Pool is just around an hour away from Katherine. From Darwin, it’s about 4 hours, and from Kakadu it’s about 2.5 hours.
The Homestead Road will lead through to the pool. If you’re up for exploring the area around the thermal springs, take a walk and wander! The Riverside Walk is a popular route to spot the native wildlife and plants.
Need to know…
Going there during the summer, it will be very, very hot! Just bear in mind that the temperatures in the Northern Territory can exceed 40 degrees Celsius, so being at such a hot location during this time could be a bit risky!
