Your Guide to Koolpin Gorge (Jarrangbarnmi)

Jarrangbarnmi is a rugged rock that surrounds a pristine valley full of water, forming a deep gorge in the red centre.

Nestled in the south of the Kakadu National Park, you’ll find Jarrangbarnmi/Koolpin Gorge.

Only accessible by 4WD, this is a secluded gorge that has a capacity limit to protect the land and culture of the Jawoyn people.

Koolpin Gorge does require a bushwalking permit, and it has a capacity of 40 people at one time. There is some very beautiful greenery and fascinating rock formations that surround the gorge.

Can I swim at Koolpin Gorge?

If you’re trekking across the red rocks of Koolpin Gorge towards the water, there’s probably only one thing on your mind: Going for a swim!

Although it requires a decent level of fitness to complete the hike into the gorge, the trek at Jarrangbarnmi offers a beautiful reward at the end.

There are crocodiles in the creek next to the campground/vegetation pool. Read the signs around the National Park carefully.

Wildlife in Koolpin Gorge

Due to the lack of human action around this area, there’s plenty of wildlife in Koolpin Gorge that you can see – you only have to look up and you’ll be able to spot a whole variety of different birds!

You can also take the 2 km hike up to the gorge around the gorge to see the outside of the gorge, as well as some of the amazing wildlife that inhabits it. You won’t need a bushwalking permit for this part. There is some beautiful scenery around here, such as the Gouldian Finch and the hooded parrot.

There are saltwater crocodiles that live in the creek. While it might be tempting to cool off in the creek, it’s advised not to go inside it.

How to get there

To get to Koolpin Gorge it’s pretty easy!

There is a corrugated and bumpy road that leads to the car park, so you will need a 4WD. It will also flood during the wet season, so it’s best advised to visit Koolpin Gorge during the dry season when it’s accessible.

Getting a permit, however, takes up to 7 days to apply, so if you’re set on going to Koolpin Gorge, make sure you get your permit sorted early to avoid disappointment.
